Is a Company Stamp Required on a GST Invoice?

Quick answer: No. GST law does not require a Rubber Stamp on a tax invoice. Rule 46 of the CGST Rules requires the signature or digital signature of the supplier or an authorised representative. Many businesses still add the Authorised Signatory stamp because customers, auditors and procurement teams expect it on paper invoices.

What does Rule 46 require on a tax invoice?

A GST tax invoice must include details such as the supplier's name, address and GSTIN, an invoice number and date, recipient details, HSN or SAC codes, taxable value, tax rates and amounts, place of supply, and the signature or digital signature of the supplier or authorised representative. A Company stamp isn't on the list.

Why do businesses still stamp invoices?

  • Many buyers' accounts teams reject unstamped paper invoices as a matter of internal policy.
  • The "For [Company Name] / Authorised Signatory" stamp shows the person signed on behalf of the business.
  • It makes original invoices easier to tell from photocopies.

Which stamp goes on an invoice?

The Authorised Signatory stamp, with the signature inside it. Add the round seal only if a customer specifically asks. See How to Sign and Stamp Company Documents.

What about e-invoices and digitally generated invoices?

Invoices generated electronically under the e-invoicing system don't need a physical signature or stamp. For other digital invoices, a digital signature satisfies the signature requirement. A scanned stamp image adds nothing legally.

What GST does require: the signboard

While a stamp isn't mandatory, GST rules do require registered persons to display their name and GSTIN at the place of business. Read GST Signboard Rules and our checklist for after GST registration.

Is there such a thing as a 'GST stamp'?

No. Your normal Company Authorised Signatory stamp is used on GST paperwork.
