Quick facts
- State rule: No Gujarat law forces private businesses to use Gujarati on Signboards.
- Court: In August 2023 the Gujarat High Court said private persons cannot be forced by a court order to use Gujarati and should be sensitised instead.
- Companies Act: Section 12(3)(a) requires the Company Name and registered office address outside every office, in legible letters.
- GST: CGST Rule 18 requires the GSTIN on the name board at the place of business.
- Best practice: Gujarati and English on the same board.
Is Gujarati compulsory on a Signboard in Gujarat?
Unlike Maharashtra and Karnataka, Gujarat has no state law that compels private shops or offices to display Gujarati. A government circular encouraged Gujarati on display boards, and in August 2023 a public interest petition asked the Gujarat High Court to enforce it strictly. The court declined, saying private persons cannot be forced by a court order and should be sensitised instead (Bar & Bench).
So Gujarati is recommended, not compelled. Most businesses still add it, because customers, municipal staff and GST officers in Gujarat read Gujarati first.
What the board must show anyway
- Companies and LLPs: name and registered office address outside the office under Section 12 of the Companies Act, plus CIN/LLPIN as good practice.
- GST-registered businesses: GSTIN on the name board under CGST Rule 18. See GST Signboard Rules.
- Annual return: the board appears in the registered office photograph for MGT-7 / MGT-7A.
